Little Switzerland, NC

Far along the Blue Ridge Parkway, at mile marker 334, lies the charming town of Little Switzerland, NC. This small town features a general store, cafe, and bookstore, offering a pleasant spot to grab a nice cup of coffee. Up the hill, you will find the Switzerland Inn. Established in 1910, this historic hotel has been passed down through generations, preserving its old-world charm. The lodging consists of casual quarters in the main lodge, suites, cottages, and a relaxing spa.

The property has a seasonal swimming pool, hot tub, cornhole, horseshoes, two restaurants, and a pub. You can also find some shops, an ice cream parlor, and a lovely chapel on the grounds. At sunset, the gas fire pits are lit to create a nice ambiance for watching the spectacular sight of the sun setting behind the mountains while sipping your cocktail in your rocking chair. You can also enjoy this view sitting in a rocking chair or at a table playing one of the many games offered in the main lodge.

The Main Lodge offers cozy guest rooms, most of which feature private balconies with stunning mountain or resort views. The historic inn offers a range of lodging options, including romantic suites, cozy cottages, and secluded houses perfect for the whole family.

The two restaurants at the Switzerland Inn are the Chalet restaurant and the Terrace Bar, both offering views of the Great Smokey Mountains. The food and service are 10/10 for both breakfast and dinner. The Fowl Play Pub serves up some tasty asian duck wings to get your meal started. The ambiance makes you feel as though you are in a duck club, which was heaven for my duck-hunting hubby!

If traveling the Blue Ridge Parkway, check ahead for road closures due to damage sustained from Hurricane Helene and wildfire hazards. Check the National Park Service website for updates on hiking trail conditions.

As you travel on the Parkway, you’ll encounter numerous hiking trails and small towns. Go north, and you will find yourself headed toward the towns of Blowing Rock and Boone. Head south, and you will be about an hour away from Asheville. We hiked the Rough Ridge Trailhead starting at Tanawha Trail and the Crabtree Falls Trail.

At Milepost 302.8, the Rough Ridge Trailhead offers a moderate 1.2-mile out-and-back hike to cable-led pathways that lead to a breathtaking panoramic view of the mountains, with Grandfather Mountain and the Linn Cove Viaduct capturing your attention.

The Crabtree Falls Trail, located at Milepost 339.5, is a 2.5-mile loop trail that offers moderate difficulty, featuring steep and rocky terrain. At the base of the trail, you will find a towering 70-foot waterfall roaring with water, which runs under a wooden bridge.

If you are a motorcycle rider, you will also find the Diamondback-NC226. This part of the diamond-shaped loop that makes up the 38-mile ride starts in Marion and joins the Blue Ridge Parkway at Little Switzerland. This 12-mile stretch features more than 190 steep climbing curves, numerous switchbacks that loop almost 360 degrees, and numerous S curves that climb and twist sharply.

Whether your interest is in the outdoors or the arts, Little Switzerland, NC, is the perfect destination for you! Whether you’re hiking, biking, lounging, or playing pickleball, you’re sure to be satisfied!
